Testing Requirements for Graduation in Texas

Under House Bill 5 (HB 5), passed by the 83rd Texas Legislature and signed by the governor, high school students are now required to pass five State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) end-of-course exams to meet the new graduation requirements. The following high school courses require a passing score on an End Of Couse Exam (EOC) in order to graduate:
Algebra 1
English 1
English 2
Biology
US History

Each year students are allowed to re-test if they have not acquired a satisfactory score.  There will be an EOC re-test given several times a year - December, March, May and June.   Students who are attempting to complete EOC's for graduation will be placed into remediation courses for extended time in the curriculum.

SAT/ACT

College bound students are usually required to take a college entrance exam. Some colleges and universities have other ways to enter such as by committee.  If you will be attending a two year college, you may be required to take the TSI. (details below) Those students who are top ten percent and will be automatically admitted to a state public college must meet TSI exemptions in order to enroll in classes. UT automatically admits top 6% of the senior class.  Juniors, you will want to test in the spring or summer to be ready to apply to college in the fall, especially if you are in the top ten percent.  You can begin applying to colleges after July 1 between your junior and senior year. College applications open July 1.  Seniors, if you have not tested, try to test early in the fall in order to meet college entrance deadlines.  We offer the SAT and ACT at Shepherd High School during the school day.

Texas Success Initiative assessment
TSIA

The TSI  is a state-legislated program designed to improve student success in college. Part of the program is an assessment to determine your basic skills in reading, mathematics and writing. All credit students are required by law to take an assessment test prior to enrollment in college credit courses unless exempt in the following ways:
READING and Evidence Based Writing  EBRW
ACT: Composite 23 AND English score of  19

MATH
