What is dual credit?Dual credit means students receive a college credit and high school credit at the same time. Most state funded colleges will transfer the college credits depending on the major. (Exceptions could include: Engineering programs that do not accept College Algebra) Best practice would be for the student to check with their target university to see which courses are needed on their degree plan. There is no guarantee that the credit will transfer to every program.
As a college student, you automatically have access to the Lone Star College-Kingwood or SFASU resources, such as tutoring, and library services. The responsibility for applying, taking required tests, meeting deadlines and paying for any books belongs to the student, as any college student taking a college course. It is important to remember that these courses are college courses offered at the high school. The expectation and academic challenge are at a college level. The dual credit courses at Shepherd High School are currently offered online. You will be in a computer lab or classroom with chrome books one period for every dual credit course you take. You are responsible for logging in each day, accessing the assignments and making sure to turn in assignments on time. If there is a computer problem, email your professor and let them know. The professors speak directly to students about any issues. They ask that students contact them personally if there are issues. Professors want to communicate with the student. |

How are grades reported? The school will get reports from the university with a final grade for the course. The grade will be entered on the transcript as follows: A=95 B=85 C=75 D=70 Grades that receive a D are any grade between 60 and 69. If a D is received in a course, the student will be awarded a high school credit but not a college credit. College grades that are below a 60 or F are translated as a 65. No college grade of a D (60-69) or F (below 60) can be transferred to another university. Dual credit core courses are weighted and will only be offered in those courses which all students have the opportunity to take. Remember that you will be permanently removed from the dual credit program if a final grade in any course is a D or lower (below 70 for the college course). Consider your schedule and commitments carefully before enrolling in a college course.

what do I need to do to qualify for dual credit courses? |
Before being placed into dual credit, students will need to test college ready in the area of the desired course. Acceptable tests are: PSAT/NMSQT, SAT/ACT, some STAAR EOCs or the TSI test. The TSI (Texas Success Initiative) is a state-legislated program designed to improve student success in college. Part of the program is an assessment to determine your basic skills in reading, mathematics and writing. All credit students are required by law to take an assessment test prior to enrollment in college credit courses unless exempt in the following ways:
READING and Evidence Based Writing EBRW ACT: Composite 23 AND English score of 19 SAT: 480 Reading PSAT/NMSQT: 460 STAAR ENGLISH 2 4000 MATH ACT: Composite 23 AND Math 19 SAT: Math 530 PSAT/NMSQT: 510 STAAR EOC ALGEBRA 1 4000 TSI scores are good for five years. If you are testing in high school and passed the TSI test in reading, writing and math, you may turn these in to your college along with your SAT or ACT score. Community colleges do not require the SAT or ACT but do need a TSI score in order to register for courses. TSI Complete Scores if not exempted by scores listed above: Reading - 351 Writing - Essay score of 4 with a multiple choice score of 340 Math - 350 COMPLETE PRE-ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY The pre-assessment activity must be viewed before a student can sit for placement testing. The is intended to inform the student about why a student needs test, what scores need to be attained and what options there are for practice. The test is not a pass/fail test but a placement test. Lone Star College also requires students complete this activity once enrolled in classes. |
